Domestic consumption of black pepper in pepper producing
countries has increased by 9% during 2003, from 83,000 tons in
2002 to 90,000 tons. This increase can be attributed largely to
a reported increase in domestic consumption in India, from 52,000
tons to 58,000 tons. India is estimated to have imported 10,000
tons of black pepper for domestic consumption during 2003. Indonesia,
Malaysia and Vietnam together also imported about 4,200 tons.
